Trends

The following are the key business trends that we believe will be prevalent in 2008.

Green IT

Green IT will continue to be at the forefront of businesses' strategies next year. Businesses are under increasing pressure from the Government to bring down their carbon emissions.

Potential "green" regulations could further constrain companies from expanding data centres. The impact of power grids and carbon emissions are also under constant scrutiny. Thus the pressure on organisations to get and stay green is only set to increase.
Virtualisation
Virtualisation has emerged as a key investment priority for CIO’s. The benefits of virtualisation are compelling. The technology lets you allocate shared computing resources to boost hardware utilisation rates, reduce infrastructure costs and complexity and eliminate "server sprawl". Virtualisation also ensures high availability of networked systems and data as well as helps to align IT processes with business goals.

The savings possible through virtualisation implementation are immense. According to a recent report by Butler Group, an organisation running 250 dual core servers could save £2 million over just three years. Moving from a full desktop PC infrastructure to a server-hosted desktop virtualisation solution across 1,000 computers could save £78,000 annually, while the use of application virtualisation technology to increase self-service and cut helpdesk calls could save £4,000 per 1,000 calls.
Software as a Service (SaaS)
The SaaS model will continue to gain momentum as a delivery option for companies of all sizes. The model enables organisations to distinguish between utility and business-enhancing activities and make strategic decisions regarding delivery options for each.

In the coming year it is expected that the industry’s big market markers, notably IBM and Microsoft but many others as well, will move major parts of their offerings online.
Organisation Culture
Managing change continues to be the topmost concern for CIO’s. Also corporate culture is increasingly emerging as a key driver for competitive advantage in today’s business environment.

A survey of more than 200 IT leaders at the IT Directors Forum 2007 has revealed that 47% believe managing change is the most important issue they face, up from 42.1% in 2006.

Change management continues to be major challenge due to the lack of a standard framework to guide IT Directors. Another contributing factor is the lack of skills in change management and, more specifically, leadership skills in this area.
Tapping into a world of talent
Organisation will increasingly adopt the global delivery model to parcel out work across the globe. Attracting and retaining the right people in the right position should be the top priority, even if the talent is off-shore, contracted, free-agent, or virtual.
